Future-proofing for all of Denmark
The Triangle Region is centrally located where the E20 and E45 motorways meet and connect Denmark with Europe.
An efficient motorway network in the Triangle Region is crucial for growth and cohesion. The area contributes with Denmark's second highest prosperity and houses 205,000 jobs, extensive commuting, and a production center with thousands of companies that depend on smooth transport.
Therefore, the Triangle Region Denmark is working to future-proof the motorway network. Lack of capacity can damage timely deliveries, commuting, and exports – and thereby Denmark's competitiveness and prosperity.
Critical congestion is spreading
Unfortunately, motorway capacity in the Triangle Region is under pressure. On several stretches, traffic is so intense that there is already critical congestion. On other stretches, critical congestion looms a few years into the future.
But the necessary investments in the motorway network in the Triangle Region do not happen automatically. When politicians in the Danish Parliament must make decisions about infrastructure investments, projects in the Triangle Region compete with other traffic projects throughout the country.
Therefore, the Triangle Region Denmark has advocated for the four most important motorway projects in the Triangle Region:
- A lane expansion of E45/E20 around Kolding
- A third Little Belt connection
- A lane expansion of E45 between Vejle and Skanderborg
- New Central Jutland Motorway Haderslev-Give-Hobro
This has borne fruit in the broad political agreement Infrastructure Plan 2035, which was concluded on June 28, 2021:
- ✔️ Lane expansion of E45/E20 around Kolding from exit 64 to Aarhus/Funen interchange will start in 2022
- (✔️) A strategic analysis of a new road and rail connection over the Little Belt will be initiated
- ✔️ Lane expansion of E45 between Vejle North and Skanderborg South will start in 2022
- ❗ The New Central Jutland Motorway was not decided in its entirety – but Billund and Billund Airport will be connected with a new motorway section to the Herning motorway at Give
Seen from the Triangle Region's perspective, there is reason to be satisfied with the result of Infrastructure Plan 2035, but Triangle Region Denmark naturally continues advocacy in this area.
